Drifting is a motor sport in which racecars slide sideways on racetrack turns. This dangerous extreme sport got its start in Japan and is fairly new to American raceways. This is the first year a championship drifting run has taken place in the U.S.,

with the D1 Grand Prix in Irwindale, Calif. The 2004 GTO is the first domestic car to compete in championship level drifting. First built in the 60s, this American motoring legend is lightweight with lots of power and low-end torque - great qualities for drifting.

In drifting, seconds, points, style and sex appeal count - so drivers need to push the limits to compete. And drivers say they're ready to push those limits, as the popularity of drifting rises in the U.S.
