Women and Car Care

GM logoJune 2004 While men often feel more comfortable with car care, it's women who more frequently end up taking the family vehicle in for servicing. In fact, polls find that 74 percent of women are responsible for making the maintenance decisions concerning their vehicles. But how can you make sure you don't get ripped off if you don't know your carburetor from your muffler?

It is important that you do your homework before choosing a technician. Make sure the technician is certified and that their facility is up-to-date with the latest equipment to maintain your car. Also make sure they use brand name parts that specify your car's make and model - not cheaper knock-offs that may damage your car. And make sure they offer a written estimate, explaining what work they're going to perform and what they're charging you for.

But overall, experts say to follow your instincts. If it seems like your technician is giving you the run-around or something isn't right, you should find a new technician you're more comfortable with.
