Vehicle Stability Enhancement Systems Now Offered in Large Passenger Vans

March 2004 Twelve and 15 passenger vans have become increasingly GM - General Motors popular with churches and social organizations that need to transport large groups of people. But government agencies and consumer groups have recently questioned the safety and stability of these vans. As a result, car companies are now offering stability enhancement systems in their large passenger vans.

Stability enhancement systems aren't a new technology; General Motors has offered it in many of its vehicles for several years. But GM is now integrating their stability system, called StabiliTrak™, into their 12 and 15 passenger vans. StabiliTrak's™ technology interfaces with the engine controller and the braking systems, which help drivers maintain their intended route of travel. The stability enhancement system combined with a longer wheelbase gives vans better weight distribution, especially when fully loaded.

Comparison tests on slippery surfaces show how the stability enhancement system uses selective braking and throttle control to keep the van on the course. Vehicle stability enhancement systems help drivers maintain control of vehicles during difficult driving conditions such as ice, snow, gravel, wet pavement and uneven road surfaces as well as in emergency lane changes or avoidance maneuvers.
