Tools of the Trade: Goody's Body Shop at the Victory Junction Gang Camp Gets Stocked with Medical Supplies
May 20, 2004 Van loads of bandages, peroxide, aspirin, crutches and other items were delivered to Victory Junction Gang Camp today by volunteers from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Employees from the company's Parsippany, Philadelphia-area, Pittsburgh and Research Triangle Park offices contributed supplies for the "Goody's Body Shop," Victory Junction's medical facility.
Victory Junction, located on 75 acres in Randleman, N.C., is a camp for kids ages 7 to 15 with chronic or life-threatening illnesses that was founded by NASCAR driver Kyle Petty and his wife Pattie in honor of their late son, Adam, who was killed in a racing accident in 2000.

Kids who would normally not be able to attend camp because of their medical conditions can go to Victory Junction because of the unique capabilities of the "Goody's Body Shop" and the onsite medical staff. The facility also makes a trip to the camp doctor fun. Racecar beds serve as exam tables and brightly colored "tool" chests hide medical instruments. The medical staff also wears T-shirts and shorts instead of white lab coats or "scrubs." |

Motorists To Receive Free Access To AAA's Online Mapping And Driving Directions Through New AAAmaps.Com Web Site
AAA, the nation’s largest organization for motorists, today announced plans to make its world-class routing and mapping technology available to all Internet users through a new Web site, AAAmaps.com. AAA is launching the new site today, just in time for travelers to plan their Memorial Day driving getaways.
AAAmaps.com leverages AAA’s robust Internet TripTik® mapping and routing technology which the Wall Street Journal called its “Top Choice” for online mapping services. The new AAAmaps.com site has many of the same mapping and routing capabilities as Internet TripTik and includes valuable information from AAA’s extensive data base of proprietary travel information, such as Diamond Ratings for hotels and restaurants unavailable from other online mapping services.
“AAAmaps.com is designed to offer Web users quick access to a mapping and travel planning solution whether they are driving across town or planning a lengthy driving vacation this summer,” said Sandra Hughes, vice president, AAA Travel, at today’s annual Memorial Day/Summer Travel news conference where the Web site launch was announced.
While Internet TripTik, which is available only to AAA members, is a much more comprehensive mapping and trip-planning tool, AAAmaps.com includes many of the same features and capabilities. |

AAA Projects Record Holiday Travel Despite Record High Gas Prices
Record numbers of Americans will travel this Memorial Day holiday despite record high gas prices, according to AAA. AAA estimates that 36.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday, a robust 3.6 percent increase from last year.
Approximately 30.9 million travelers (84 percent of all holiday travelers) expect to go by motor vehicle, a 3.4 percent increase from the 29.9 million who drove a year ago.
Another 4.1 million (11 percent of holiday travelers) plan to travel by airplane, up 5.3 percent from last Memorial Day. A projected 1.9 million vacationers (5 percent) will go by train, bus, or other mode of transportation, about even with a year ago.
“Record high gas prices won’t keep Americans from traveling this holiday,” said AAA Travel Vice President Sandra Hughes. “Despite gas prices that are nearly 50-cents per gallon higher than they were a year ago, record numbers of travelers will hit the highways. |

"101 Deadliest Days on the Road" The Greatest Risk of Fatal Crashes Memorial Day Through Labor Day
The 101 days from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day are the deadliest days on the road, with more fatal crashes and more children and teens dying than at any other time of the year. That’s the finding of a new report by a national coalition of driving safety advocacy groups urging families to adopt survival strategies to avoid family tragedies this summer.
“We are entering the time of year when Americans pack up everything most precious to them -- their families -- and take to the road, traveling more than one trillion miles,” said Susan Pikrallidas, AAA’s Vice President of Public Affairs. “For most, it will be a time of happy memories, but for thousands of families, their trip will end in needless tragedy. We need to change that.” |
